Biases within genomics and artificial intelligence: a comparative review of ethical and societal issues

The research fields of genomics and artificial intelligence (AI) are both vulnerable to the perverse effects of biases – which some groups are disproportionately exposed to. Yet, there has been little dialogue on how to prevent and mitigate biases between the scientific and (bio)ethics communities of scholars involved in these distinct fields. We believe there is strong potential for such dialogue to enrich scholarly discussions regarding the ethical and societal implications of biases, and to improve practical strategies for mitigating their adverse and inequitable effects. The proposed study aims to review and compare the recent (bio)ethics literature on biases within genomics and AI, analyse similarities and discrepancies between these two bodies of literature, and identify the strengths and limitations of each, to better inform the two communities on how to address their respective gaps. Bias-related issues emerging in research at the crossroads of genomics and AI will also be explored.
