With the rapid advent of the digital revolution, young people are increasingly immersed in a world where AI plays a prominent role, notably through popular applications such as Instagram, TikTok, and ChatGPT. Despite the impact of AI on their daily lives, few efforts have been made to engage young people in the discourse surrounding AI.
This situation is concerning, as they often struggle to fully grasp the implications of AI systems (AIS) and are particularly vulnerable to biases and prejudices present in these systems. For these reasons, it is essential to involve them in decision-making processes aimed at shaping an ethical and responsible AI future, starting by giving them a voice. With this goal in mind, this project aims to facilitate meaningful participation of young Quebecers aged 13 to 17 in three stages.
Firstly, we will conduct a literature review to understand how the "right to youth participation in AI" is explored in literature and the challenges surrounding this participation. Next, in collaboration with the Regroupement des maisons de jeunes du Québec, we will recruit young people aged 13-17 to participate in four or five focus groups, inviting them to reflect on their interactions with their digital environment and identify their concerns and needs regarding AIS. Building on these activities, the project will culminate in a guidance document aimed at informing decision-makers about the issues young Quebecers face concerning AI while proposing strategies to promote their inclusion in AI discussions.
By encouraging youth participation, this work will also inform the development of future policies and governmental measures aimed at promoting ethical use of AI technologies by young people and shaping a more inclusive and ethical digital future in Quebec.
