Good press or bad press? Understanding the algorithmic transformation of the journalism profession with the advent of generative artificial intelligence

This project aims to understand the algorithmic transformation of the journalism profession, specifically how the profession is evolving with the advent of generative artificial intelligence (GAI), such as ChatGPT, Bing, or Bard. This technology is indeed capable of performing tasks that are at the core of journalism: synthesizing information, rewriting or developing text, generating headlines or catchy phrases, and more. The journalism profession is thus undergoing profound disruption due to GAI (Marconi, 2020; Susskind & Susskind, 2022).

In this context, the project aims to:

  • Analyze the concrete transformations in journalists' work.
  • Measure the factors influencing these evolutions and their impact on working conditions and psychological well-being.
  • Better understand how unions contribute to regulating its usage.

In perfect alignment with the Observatory's objectives, this project intersects with three of its research axes: Industry 4.0, work and employment, Arts, media, and cultural diversity, and Sustainable health. To achieve these objectives, the project employs a combination of qualitative methods (interviews, case studies) and quantitative methods (surveys).
