Artificial immortality: ethical, legal and artistic perspectives

The social issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) have captured the attention of the research community and ethicists. In parallel with this research, the artistic domain is teeming with rich perspectives, reflecting on and anticipating tomorrow's realities. This project sits at the crossroads of creative and scientific research domains. Through it, we explore the concept of "artificial survival" facilitated by AI and the extension of the individual (digitally) after death.

Starting from fictional works, we question the current state of possibilities to create digital avatars through AI, aiming for a contemporary representation of artificial immortality. Has reality caught up with fiction? Has it surpassed fiction? If so, what are the societal impacts of "artificial immortality"? This project is supported by a review of posthumous "artificial survival" expression in the artistic domain, alongside targeted engagements with artists, authors, and creators.

The project will yield several outcomes:

On the scientific front

  • Contribution to advancing knowledge.
  • Interdisciplinary research conducted by researchers across different fields.
  • Stimulus for research projects that may emerge from the research findings.

On the social front:

  • Creation of new works co-developed by the research community and artists.
  • Consideration of ethical and legal issues by the artistic community and a broader audience.
  • Support for the student community through skill development in research and assistance to young artists in their creative processes.
