Call for contributions for a collective work on the theme 'AI, CULTURE, AND MEDIA.

The Arts, Media, and Cultural Diversity Axis of the Observatory on the Societal Impacts of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technology (OBVIA), in partnership with the UNESCO Chair on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and the Center for Media Studies (CEM), is launching a call for contributions for the creation of a collective work on the theme 'AI, Culture, and Media.' This work will be published in 2022 by the Presses de l’Université Laval, in the collection Ethics, AI, and Societies of OBVIA, directed by Lyse Langlois.

The project

Aiming to stimulate research on AI in culture and media, this work will critically address several aspects, issues, and impacts of AI in these fields. It will provide an original contribution to the scientific literature on this subject. The book will gather about twenty texts produced by researchers, practitioners, or artists from various disciplines. For reference, these texts could cover the following themes:

  • Contribution of AI to creative processes and processes of production, distribution, and dissemination
  • AI and facilitation of access to culture
  • Threats or opportunities of AI for the diversity of cultural expressions
  • The rise of AI in the field of cultural industries and media
  • AI, heritage, and collective memories
  • Impact of AI on cultural rights and artistic freedoms
  • AI and the evolution of cultural practices
  • Use of AI and issues of intellectual property
  • Algorithmic strategies and discoverability of cultural and media content
  • Ethical issues of AI in cultural industries
  • Challenges of AI for cultural policies
  • Cultural issues of the social acceptability of AI
  • Inclusion and cultural diversity in the creation and governance of AI systems
  • Cultural value of algorithmic biases
  • Impact of AI on the pluralism of cultures, languages, and knowledge
  • AI and the protection of endangered languages and cultures
  • AI, culture, and sustainability
  • Contribution of various communities (artists, designers, visible minorities, women, Indigenous peoples, etc.) to AI
  • Role of media and/or cultural institutions and/or the arts in the development and governance of AI
  • Indigenous perspectives and issues in relation to AI

Timeline

09/11/2020: Launch of the call for contributions
16/12/2020: Deadline for submission of article proposals
15/01/2021: Notification to authors of the acceptance of their proposal
30/06/2021: Submission of the chapter by the authors
30/08/2021: Review of chapters and recommendations to authors
30/10/2021: Submission of the revised chapter by the authors
June 2022: Publication and launch of the book (public conference)


Submission of a Contribution

Authors are invited to submit a chapter proposal containing the following information:

  • Author's name and affiliation
  • Keywords (3 to 5)
  • Chapter proposal (between 1500 and 2000 words), including a problem statement, an overview of the subject addressed, a summary outline, and five bibliographic references
  • Author's contact information

Proposals can be submitted in French or English. Contributions from students or emerging researchers are encouraged.
