Data anonymization

Colloquium | In person

Date:
Schedule: 13:30 to 18:30
Place: Salle multifonctionnelle, A-3421 - Pavillon Maximilien Caron, Faculté de droit - Université de Montréal

Both a method for guaranteeing data security for some, and a legal obligation to protect personal information for others, data anonymization is a topical notion federating computer sciences and social sciences. Indeed, the recent adoption of Bill 25 in Quebec and discussions on Bill C-27 at the federal level underline the pivotal role of anonymization in data governance. And that's an understatement: the risks of infringement (risks of re-identification, profiling, localization, etc.) of rights have intensified with the development of innovations (massive data, AI, use of third-party applications, etc.).

To ensure that technological development complies with the principles of the rule of law and respect for human rights and freedoms, this symposium hopes to provide an outline of the answer to the following question: to what extent is it possible to ensure the confidentiality of personal information through data anonymization?

This event is an opportunity to address the issue of data anonymization by combining the theoretical and practical approaches of experts from the computer and social sciences. A state-of-the-art review of the techniques and issues involved in data anonymization will be presented, followed by two examples: mobility data and research data. An overview of the state of the law and the legal issues surrounding data anonymization will be provided, based on the practice and results of a study carried out on mobility data. The possibility of governance based on stakeholder participation will be outlined, as it is essential to guarantee the future and effectiveness of data anonymization techniques.
