Conference-discussion: Anticipating AI's major Risks for Society

Mila, OBVIA and IVADO invite their academic communities to join an exclusive discussion with Yoshua Bengio and an interdisciplinary panel of experts aimed at engaging a reflection on the major risks of AI.

For several months, researchers in many fields have feared the catastrophic risks associated with the development of very large AI models, including threats to democracy, and even to the survival of humanity and the biosphere.

In order to understand the spectrum of risks associated with large AI models and to imagine forms of social organization that can minimize them, Professor Yoshua Bengio, professor at the University of Montreal, holder of the Turing Prize and scientific director of Mila and IVADO invites the research community to an intersectoral discussion on the issue.

In addition to a discussion with the latter, experts from many fields will give their perspectives on the issues in order to find solutions to the current and future risks of AI for society, to preserve and enhance our democracies and human rights.

In addition to Yoshua Bengio, the panel will be composed of:

Caroline Lequesne-Roth, lecturer and responsible for the Master 2 in "Algorithmic law and data governance" at the Université Côte d’Azur;

Jocelyn Maclure, professor of philosophy at McGill University, holder of the Jarislowsky Chair in Human Nature and Technology and President of the Commission on Ethics in Science and Technology;

Sonja Solomun, Deputy Director of the Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy at McGill University;

Hugo Loiseau, Professor and Director of the School of Applied Politics at l’Université de Sherbrooke;

Claire Boine, PhD in Law candidate at the University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society;

The discussion will be held in French and English. Simultaneous translation will be available.
